Certified Korean to English Translator
I translate Korean patent documents into English. That's the short version. The longer version is that I've spent years working on patent prosecution, litigation, and Patent Trial and Appeal Board matters for South Korean technology and medical device companies, translating millions of characters across projects that regularly run into thousands of pages. Filing documents, invalidation proceedings, discovery materials. The work I keep coming back to is the kind most translators won't touch.
Most of my work falls into a handful of technical areas. Wireless communications is probably the deepest, covering prior art and patent documentation across the IEEE 802.11 standards (Wi-Fi 1 through 8), cellular networks from 3G through 5G, LTE, HSPA+, WiMax, and various WPAN protocols like Zigbee and Bluetooth. I've also done a good deal of work in digital transmission and telecommunications, including OFDM, multiplexing, channel access methods, and packet switching. Video coding is another area I keep coming back to, particularly intra prediction techniques across the MPEG and H.264/AVC standards. Display technology (LCD, OLED, AMOLED, QLED) and medical devices (insulin pumps, laser therapy devices, anti-cancer drug compositions, and stimulation systems) round out the list, though it's not exhaustive.
What sets this work apart isn't just knowing the right term for 거절결정 or 의견제출통지서. It's understanding the technology well enough that the translation reads the way the inventor meant it to, not just the way the words happen to line up. That distinction shows up in the final product, and it's where I try to be especially careful.
I am currently undertaking a multi-year project to translate 특허법 주해 I, a foundational Korean patent law commentary edited by 정상조 (Sang-Jo Jeong) and 박성수 (Seong-Su Park), into English. To my knowledge, no portion of this commentary has previously appeared in English in any form. The work is one of the most thorough article-by-article treatments of the Korean Patent Act available, and its translation contributes a primary scholarly resource to the English-speaking IP community that has not existed until now.
Beyond its standalone value, this project deepens the terminology base and interpretive framework that informs my day-to-day client work, particularly on matters involving Korean patent invalidation and prosecution history.
